When it comes to Israel, U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean is our region’s “The Squad” wannabe. Since Israel began defending itself following the Palestinian-Arab atrocities of Oct. 7, 2023: 1,200 Israelis slaughtered; 251 taken captive; thousands raped and wounded in other ways – all in attacks that were unprecedented savagery – Dean has sought to weaken Israel’s ability to defend itself from those bent on anti-Jewish genocide, while she has taken up the cause of those who voted for Hamas, support Hamas, agree with the Oct. 7 attacks and have aided and abetted the holding of hostages. Now Dean even wants to reward them with a “continuous” (likely she means “contiguous”) state.

Dean initiated or was a leader of three congressional letters that among other things called for an embargo of American weapons for Israel. Now that there is an announcement of a “ceasefire” and some release of Israeli hostages held by Palestinian-Arabs, Dean has doubled-down.

Many lawmakers including some in our area released statements in the aftermath of the announcement of the “deal” between Israel and Hamas. Some of the statements from local lawmakers are on-point with a clear understanding of who the victims and who the perpetrators are – among these are Congressman Fitzpatrick and Congressman Norcross. Others issued terrible, tasteless and decidedly anti-Israel statements. None are worse than Dean’s. In fact, she seems to indicate that the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks were not acts of war – referring instead to “… the war that began shortly after October 7th, … .”

Dean declares that “approximately 46,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza — including, horrifically, many children.” Yet she does not tell her constituents that these numbers are furnished solely by the anti-Jewish Hamas, and that among that alleged number of dead are thousands of murderers, plus non-combatants who Hamas and other terrorists deliberately placed in harm’s way as human shields.” These items in Dean’s statement negate the “boilerplate” nod to Israel rightfully defending itself.

More of Dean’s statement, and statements from other local lawmakers are below under the “Advocacy” heading. Also there is the link for Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s Guide to “Contacting Congress,” an important advocacy resource.

ADVOCACY

Greater Philadelphia ZOA encourages you to engage in advocacy, monitor anti-Jewish activities, and to be pro-active in getting out in front of dangers as much as possible – such as by sending in letters-to-the-editor and reaching out to media decision-makers; checking in on what is being discussed and taught in local schools, and through speaking with family and acquaintances to keep them informed with facts and to dispel the myths and lies.

Remember: The Israel Defense Forces is the most humane military in the world; Israel and the Jewish People were attacked – and Israel must do what is necessary to eliminate the threat and rescue the captives kidnapped by Palestinian-Arabs; the relationship between the United States and Israel has always been mutually beneficial.

Now more than ever – for Israel and for American and world Jewry – advocacy and activism are vitally important. There are many advocacy opportunities and needs. Please partake and encourage others to participate. While the needs are great in Israel, if you can: Please also support Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s fight in the information war.

Accurate information and its impact on public opinion are vitally important.

If you are the victim of Jew-hatred or are aware of anti-Jewish or anti-Israel activity, please report it to Greater Philadelphia ZOA. If we at Greater Philadelphia ZOA can be of help to you – or if you want to help us at this time – please reach out at 610-660-9466 or [email protected]

New this week: Contacting Congress

It is worthwhile for Israel advocates to be in frequent contact with members of Congress and their staffs to discuss legislation, to give feedback and input on issues of importance, and to thank members of Congress for their pro-Israel statements and votes. Likewise, it is important for constituents to let their lawmakers know that they object to anti-Israel positions and votes. When engaging in advocacy, always be civil, polite and concise. Accord aide and staff of lawmakers the same respect and deference you would give to lawmakers. ZOA is a non-partisan organization and we believe that support for Israel should be a non-partisan issue.

See our guide (including new senators and House members) at: https://philly.zoa.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2025/01/contacting-congress-updated-011425-a.pdf
Please post the link to our “Contacting Congress” guide on social media, and email it to friends and contacts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

This week, House members and senators gave their pro-Israel constituents much to talk about – and to provide feedback about via statements about the “deal” between Israel and Hamas. We looked at their official websites and X (Twitter) pages to see what they had to say, or if they had anything to say. The results/statements are below, verbatim.

Local statements:

U.S. Rep Brian Fitzpatrick, R-PA:
“After 467 days—15 months of unimaginable suffering endured by innocent hostages at the hands of evil Hamas terrorists—a breakthrough has finally been reached. A hostage deal between Israel and Hamas brings hope that these individuals may soon be reunited with their families. This agreement is an important step forward, but it is not the end of the road. The fight against terror and those who perpetuate it continues.

“This moment, while filled with hope, does not erase the profound loss so many have endured. I recently met with my constituent, Debbi Gilad, who lost her family in the horrific October 7th attack: Ayala Hetzroni (74), Avia Hetzroni (70), and 12-year-old twins Liel and Yanai Hetzroni. Their story, like so many others, serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating cost of Hamas’s barbaric actions. We owe it to the victims and their families to remain resolute in our pursuit of justice.

“Our mission remains clear: Every hostage must come home. Every victim deserves justice. And every perpetrator of terror must face the full force of accountability.

“This is not a moment for complacency but for renewed determination. We must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends in Israel, united against the forces of terror. Terror will not triumph because we will not waver. And together, we will see this fight through and ensure freedom, security, and peace prevail.”

U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-PA:
“I welcome the announcement of this agreement. On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a barbaric attack, killing over 1,200 innocent people and seizing 251 hostages. The devastation that followed has claimed the lives of far too many innocent civilians, leaving countless families in heartbreak and grief.

“This agreement is a vital step toward ensuring the safe return of Israeli hostages. I am overjoyed for those families who will now be able to welcome home their loved ones.

“The ceasefire also provides a critical opportunity to ease the suffering of innocent civilians in Gaza and deliver much-needed humanitarian relief—something I have strongly supported since the start of this conflict.””

U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-PA:
““Today, I am relieved and cautiously optimistic to know that a ceasefire-hostage deal has been agreed upon — that the crucial first step toward a “day after” is in reach, and that hostages in Gaza — including living American hostages Keith Siegel, Sagui Dekel-Chen, and Edan Alexander — are closer to coming home.

“For more than a year, extraordinary suffering has taken place in Israel and Palestine. On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists launched brutal attacks on Israel, killing more than 1,200 Israelis and taking 250 hostages, including seven American citizens. Israel, reeling from this horrific act of terrorism, availed itself of its right — and responsibility — to defend itself and its people.

“During the war that began shortly after October 7th, approximately 46,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza — including, horrifically, many children. In addition, Gaza has been catapulted into a state of humanitarian crisis — with insufficient access to food, water, fuel, medical supplies, and other necessities.

“I have seen the scars of this war up close — traveling to Israel twice since October 7, 2023. I met with Kibbutz community members, grieving parents, and other Israelis impacted by the horror of October 7th. I have met with the families of hostages in Israel and here at home dozens of times. Many of the hostage families urged me to call for a ceasefire and an end to the war, so that they can be reunited with their loved ones or, tragically, bury their dead with dignity.

“I am grateful to President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the entire Biden Administration — including National Security Advisor Sullivan, Secretary Blinken, and everyone who has put their lives on hold to work toward peace over the past 14 months. Throughout the various stages of this conflict, I have met with NSA Sullivan and Secretary Blinken, as well as many members of their staff. We owe a debt of gratitude to these hard-working public servants, who have and will continue to move us toward peace in the coming months and years.

“A ceasefire is extraordinary progress; and the work is not done. Israel has a right to exist — the Jewish people have a right to live, thrive, and be secure in their cultural, ethnic, and religious practices. We must protect our democratic ally.

“And so too, there must be self-determination for Palestinians — liberty, dignity, joy, and a rebuilding — in a state of their own. Long overdue is a continuous, democratic, and autonomous Palestinian State — in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

“With the encouraging news of a ceasefire and potential end to the Israel-Hamas War — an end to the war, and security and sovereignty for two nations must be realized.

“As I believe: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.””

U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans, D-PA:
“Having called for such an agreement nearly a year ago, I’m pleased to see the announcement of a ceasefire agreement to bring the hostages home and deliver desperately needed aid to Palestinians. Thank you to the Biden administration for their behind-the-scenes hard work that made this deal possible. I’m hopeful this is a step forward towards lasting peace in the region.”

U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-PA:
No statement

U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-PA:
Tweeted White House statement, adding: “Grateful for word of this significant breakthrough. The gradual ceasefire and hostage releases are both most welcome news, with thanks to @POTUS, @SecBlinken, and our global partners in negotiating this agreement.”

U.S. Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-PA:
No statement

U.S. Rep. Robert Bresnahan, R-PA:
No statement

U.S. Rep. Daniel Meuser, R-PA:
“The ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas is a testament to the strength of President-Elect
@realDonaldTrump’s decisive leadership. Just as Iran released American hostages the day President Reagan took office, Hamas was clearly compelled to act by President Trump. His firm warning that “all hell will break out” if hostages weren’t released by January 20 sent an unmistakable message, bringing Hamas to the negotiating table. This agreement demonstrates the power of peace through strength. The world is already seeing the positive change a Trump Administration will bring, even before he takes office.”

U.S. Rep. Scott Perry, R-PA:
No statement

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker, R-PA:
No statement

U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross, D-NJ:
“Hamas terrorists have held American and Israeli hostages captive in Gaca since October 7, 2023. The hostages have had to endure unimaginable pain and suffering for over a year, and now, finally, they will be able to come home. The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, orchestrated by President Biden, Secretary Blinken, and our international partners, is a long overdue framework that will release 33 hostages, set the stage for the remaining hostages to come home, and begin the reconstruction of Gaza. I hope that the devastation caused by Hamas terrorists will now come to an end and that we can finally form lasting peace and security for Israel and the entire Middle East.”

U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-NJ:
No statement

U.S. Rep. Herbert Conaway, D-NJ:
“It is welcome news to see that there is a ceasefire agreement between Israel & Hamas that will bring the hostages home.

“I hope that every phase of this agreement is implemented, allowing Israeli hostage families & innocent Palestinians to begin healing from this devastating war.”

U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride, D-DE:
“”The reports of a ceasefire agreement and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas could not be more welcome. The loss of lives, homes, and communities since October 7, 2023 in Israel and Gaza has been heartbreaking — and this is an important step toward securing safety for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”

Meanwhile, among area senators:

Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-DE:
“After repeatedly calling for an end to the violence in Gaza, I’m pleased to learn of reports that Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement on a ceasefire. The deal is crucial to reducing the violence in the region, ensuring the release of hostages – including the remaining American hostages, and ending the destruction for Palestinians in Gaza.

“President Biden, Secretary Blinken, and all those involved in negotiations deserve immense credit for brokering this ceasefire deal and restoring faith in diplomacy. As President Biden leaves office, this ceasefire agreement is a remarkable achievement that will hopefully create a pathway to peace for the entire region, address Gaza’s desperate humanitarian crisis, and promote security for all Israelis.”

Sen. Corey Booker, D-NJ:
No statement

Sen. Christopher Coons, D-DE:
““I am overjoyed by reports that Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement for a cease-fire, the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas, and the return of Palestinian civilians to their homes across Gaza.

“This is the direct result of the tireless efforts by President Biden, Secretary of State Blinken, and the Biden national security team to bring a pause to hostilities in Gaza, secure the release of innocent civilians kidnapped by Hamas during the horrific October 7 terrorist attack, and increase the flow of desperately needed humanitarian assistance to civilians across Gaza. This cease-fire agreement is an important step toward restoring stability to the region, securing Israel’s safety, and ending Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. I commend President Biden for his resilience, determination, and faith in diplomacy to achieve peace.””

Sen. John Fetterman, D-PA:
No statement

Sen. Andy Kim, D-NJ:
“The announcement of this ceasefire comes as a relief for the families of hostages who have been without their loved ones for 466 days, but far too late for those hostages who have been killed and the thousands of Palestinian civilians who have died since. Those of us in New Jersey are pressing for Eden Alexander to be one of those released, and I have made that clear to the White House.

“The terms of the ceasefire are only as good as the willingness of both sides to adhere to its conditions, and I strongly encourage the Israeli government and Hamas to move forward in good faith. Every day forward must be dedicated to ensuring that the tragedy of October 7th and the events that have taken place since never happens again. The Palestinian people need immediate humanitarian assistance and support for rebuilding, and deserve a pathway to statehood, respect, and stability. That cannot happen with Hamas in charge. Hamas is a terrorist organization, an existential threat to the state of Israel, and should be removed from power. The Israeli people deserve that same security and stability and ability to defend itself from external threats.

“This must be the moment where we break the cycle of violence in the Middle East. Israeli and Palestinian families deserve a world where their children can grow up free from fear and with greater opportunity and prosperity delivered. I will work with the incoming administration to set conditions to achieve the goal of this being the last ceasefire that is necessitated in this conflict.”

New this week: Nazi vs. Nazi

According to reports on social media, a resident of Blue Bell, Montgomery County displayed a flag bearing a swastika on a flag pole on his or her property. Rightfully so, the community is outraged at the sight of a despicable Nazi flag – especially since it was flown on the anniversary of Kristallnacht.

CNN reported this week that outside of a theater in Michigan where a production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” was being performed, Jew-haters stood on a corner waving Nazi flags – and there was deserved outrage.

Nazi flags and symbols are anti-Jewish as well as anti-American. Thousands of Americans were killed by Nazis during World War II, and in recent decades, Americans have been killed by “neo-Nazis” and Nazi sympathizers – including the 11 Jews murdered in the Tree of Life Congregation massacre. It is un-American to display these flags and symbols, and widespread condemnation and ridicule is in order.

In the past year, literally thousands of PLO flags have been waved and brandished in America’s streets and on America’s campuses and even in America’s K-12 schools by assorted Jew-haters. The PLO – Palestine Liberation Organization – has the same goal as did and do Nazis, and they have slaughtered Jews and Americans under that banner. Yet there is little or no outcry, outrage or angst among Jews and by public officials at the sight of these flags.

A statement from the Whitpain Township Board of Supervisors in response to the Nazi flag in Blue Bell declares:

“The Whitpain Township Board of Supervisors has been made aware of the recent display of a Nazi flag in the Township.  Both collectively and as individuals, we find this demonstration abhorrent, shocking, and offensive.  There is no excuse nor any explanation for flying this flag.  Full stop.  That flag was and remains contrary to all that we believe in and all that our Township represents. Now, as established by the Supreme Court of the United States, we recognize this display is protected free speech under the First Amendment.  Accordingly, while Whitpain Township is prohibited from and will not be taking any action toward the display, as individuals who live here, we condemn it in the strongest possible terms.  We will not be silent in the face of evil.  We trust our community will join us.”

Each of us has a duty to make sure that our neighbors; our local, state and federal governments; our educators; our media; our clergy – and others – are educated about what that PLO and its (“Palestinian”) flag are, what the flag represents, the trail of Jewish blood and American blood of innocents shed in its name, and that it is at least as worthy of condemnation as is a Nazi swastika flag. The objective of those who display the “Palestinian” flag is the murder of Israel’s 7.5 million Jews! That they are not Hamas does not make them any better than Hamas.

We must wholeheartedly and relentlessly be engaged in exposing and challenging today’s enemies as we are yesterday’s enemies. It begins with education. It continues by asking officials to condemn the PLO flag and those who display it, and that all consider it as un-American as is the Nazi flag. We must speak up!

Please see more advocacy items below.

Host an Event Featuring Our Presentation about

Identifying and Combatting Jew-hatred

Now is the time for those in the Jewish community and our non-Jewish friends and allies to step up to put a stop to the rampant anti-Jewish activity and Jew-hatred that is enveloping nearly every facet of society. But how can you prevent and combat it if you don’t know the extent of it, and what and who its many sources are?

For large audiences or small; in a public space or in a home — Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s presentation, “Jew-Hatred: It’s Many Sources and What You Can Do About It,” is a timely audio-visual presentation that concentrates on the groups, entities and individuals who are endangering Jewish people, Jewish institutions and Israel – right here in our region. ADVOCACY

Greater Philadelphia ZOA is encouraging you to engage in advocacy, monitor anti-Jewish activities, and to be pro-active in getting out in front of problems as much as possible – such as by sending in letters-to-the-editor and reaching out to media decision-makers; checking in on what is being discussed and taught in local schools, and through speaking with family and acquaintances to keep them informed with facts and to dispel the myths and lies.

Please see a number of pro-Israel advocacy items and resources below.

Now more than ever – for Israel and for American and world Jewry – advocacy and activism is vitally important. There are many advocacy opportunities and needs. Please partake and encourage others to participate. While the needs are great in Israel, if you can: Please also support Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s fight in the information war.

In addition, accurate information and public opinion are vitally important.

New this week: How to succeed in chess

As important as advocacy and activism are, and we encourage them constantly and thank those who engage in them — advocacy and activism are not to be taken lightly, cannot be performed haphazardly — and activists must always think, plan and act multiple “moves” ahead.

Advocacy/activism are both “three-dimensional chess” and a “three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle.” The moves you make; the pieces you move or tamper with or remove or try to squeeze in — lead to other moves and a string of repercussions and often unintended consequences if we are not careful and fail to plan for them.

Successful advocacy/activism is an art and a science – and never a “game.”

Done incorrectly, one might become the proverbial “bull in the china shop” and it could be a “china shop” where the china and the shards you create fight back.

Continue your important advocacy and activism but do it in this order: “ready, aim, fire” rather than “ready, fire, aim” or “fire, ready, aim.”

Greater Philadelphia ZOA is revitalizing our Advocacy Committee. If you would like to participate, email us with your name and phone number and we will be in contact with you. Thank you.

Please see more advocacy items, resources and tools below!

Host an Event Featuring Our Presentation about Identifying and Combatting Jew-hatred

You will hear some of them in their own words; you will see what they have written; you will see what they have been doing and are planning. Our presentation also offers remedies and action items.

Following the presentation, there is time for a lively question-and-answer period and discussion.

To schedule an in-person presentation for a congregation, a group or in a home or office for a “parlor” meeting, please call Executive Director Steve Feldman at 610-660-9466.

Greater Philadelphia ZOA is looking for volunteers to help out in our Bala Cynwyd office.

We are also looking for people to do internet research projects from your home or office.

We are also looking for volunteers to make calls from your home or office.

If you are able to help with any of these, please contact executive director Steve Feldman at 610-660-9466.

Thank you in advance.

We are grateful to volunteers Andy and Richard for their  invaluable help!

Newsletter for November 3, 2023

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,

We hope that our newsletter this week finds you and your loved ones well – all things considered.

For those of you who are in Israel, or who have loved ones in Israel: We hope you are safe and/or your loved ones are safe there. You remain in our prayers – as does all of Israel and particularly those defending and protecting Israelis – and the focus of all of our efforts at ZOA. We hope you will soon at least have some solace.

As you are likely aware, the anti-Jewish activity nationwide is at unprecedented levels. The Philadelphia region is one of the epicenters or hives of it all: Massive daily marches and protests in the streets – sometimes several a day; Arab students intimidating and harassing Jewish students in school as young as third grade!; walkouts on campuses; incessant anti-Israel media bias.

Please remember to be vigilant at this time. Practice situational awareness at all times and treat any suspicious activity seriously. On Wednesday evening at a coffee shop in Southampton, domestic terrorists shouting “Free Palestine” entered the eatery, made a beeline for an Israeli flag on display, tore it off of the wall and walked out with it. See the report at:

https://6abc.com/cafe-ole-in-the-valley-israeli-flag-israel-masked-men/14003636/

A reminder that the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht is on Nov. 9-10. Please be especially vigilant about safety and security on those days.

See below:

  • We are promoting a BUYcott to counter a local anti-Jewish boycott orchestrated by supporters of genocide against Jews that targets specific Jewish-owned businesses.
  • There is rampant anti-Israel media bias on local TV news, KYW Newsradio, the Inquirer and other outlets. See an example as well as our Media Action Guide.
  • Local vicious anti-Jewish activities and groups are not new to our region, and they run the gamut of the ideological spectrum and cross religious and racial lines. Learn who is working against Israel and Jewry and what we can do about it in Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s new audio/visual presentation exposing the many sources of Jew-hatred.
  • See details about the National ZOA Justice Louis D. Brandeis Dinner on Dec. 3, and buy your tickets to attend!
  • Marc Lamont Hill launches another anti-Jewish tirade – and Wednesday he will lead an event at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Tirade and details below.
  • See many advocacy suggestions and links to fact-sheets, maps and other resources. Please take the time to read through this entire newsletter when time permits.

Now-former Temple University professor Marc Lamont Hill – who now is a tenured professor in the Graduate School at CUNY, goes off on a menacing, lie-filled, anti-Jewish tirade at a rally in Philadelphia this past Sunday. See it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-zXf0GjBOU

On Wednesday, the Free Library of Philadelphia is hosting another event featuring Hill at its Central Branch. He will essentially be leading a discussion with author Tanisha Ford. The Free Library and staff have committed a litany of attacks against the Jewish People in recent years, demonizing Zionism and Israel while promoting false narratives about the Middle East.

Greater Philadelphia ZOA has reached out to the head of the Library to express our concern that it is giving a platform to such an aggressive, outspoken inciter of Jew-hatred. It would seem that to do so is harmful to the Jewish community as well as to the confidence Philadelphians can place in the Library system, which should be a safe space for all. We have sent numerous examples of Hill’s anti-Jewish activities including praise for terrorists who attempted to mass-murder Jews – including one who attempted to murder more Jews than Hamas did on Oct. 7. Kelly Richards is president and director of the Library. The phone number for his office is 215-686-5300. If you call, please be civil and concise in your comments.

ADVOCACY

Media bias

The news media can either inform the community or misinform the community. The choice lies with the leadership of the news outlet be it print, TV, radio, or web-based. Anti-Jewish/anti-Israel bias is perhaps more insidious and dangerous in local news outlets, where people largely look at or listen to for weather, sports and a summary of news in the area. Unfortunately there has been a fair share of extremely misleading and false broadcasts, articles and reports both from the Middle East and local reactions to events in the Middle East as Israel defends itself against genocidal attacks. For example, see this particularly egregious report from CBS 3 at the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoLVo_PVU0s

You will notice that in that report, not only was there no mention of the slaughter of 1,400 Israelis and the wounding of more than 5,000 additional Israelis on Oct 7 – no mention of 8,000 rockets fired by Arabs on Israeli communities since Oct. 7, no mention of the more than 25,000 rockets Palestinian-Arabs have fired at Israeli communities for the past 22 years, and no mention of the PLO’s “pay-to-slay” murders of Jews and the nearly incessant terrorism and slaughter waged against Jews in the land dating back to at least 1929. The report is an entirely one-sided propaganda piece for the Palestinian-Arab war against the Jewish People.

It is important that those concerned about the well-being of Israel and the Jewish People respond to bad reporting and also engage in pro-active advocacy BEFORE there is a misleading or hatred-inciting report. Phone calls are more effective than emails or letters. You can also attempt to comment on a local news outlet’s social media page. If you call or email: For broadcast news (TV, radio) try to reach the news director or station manager. For print: Try to reach the news editor, executive editor or publisher. Please be mindful to always be civil and to try to be as concise as possible. Remember: The goal is to get the outlet to correct and improve.

See our media guide for contact information and names: https://philly.zoa.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/05/MEDIA-ACTION-GUIDE-march-2023-update-032123.pdf

Counter a vile boycott targeting local Jewish-owned businesses with a BUYcott!

Something called the Philly Palestine Coalition, an intersectional collective that has in common hatred of the Jewish People and Israel, has called for BDS – in this case a boycott of businesses that seem to have in common the fact that they are owned by Jewish people – the coalition labels them as “Zionists.”

It is always good to support fellow Zionists, and it is especially important to do so when they are under attack. See the Coalition’s anti-Jewish screed and the names of the businesses in the three social-media screenshots below. Locations and other information about these businesses can easily be found on the Web. If you participate in patronizing these businesses, please let management know that you are there because of a notice from Greater Philadelphia ZOA. Thank you!

Large anti-Jewish/anti-Zionist/anti-Israel demonstrations, rallies and marches are taking place regularly throughout our region – not only in Philadelphia. If you are interested in seeing and hearing the vitriolic, hateful, and false information spewed in speeches/rants and on signs, watch video at the link from a recent such event in Center City:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc53FjGkj70

Each of us must remain vigilant and we must participate in pro-Israel and pro-Jewish advocacy and activism – whether something simple such as buying goods from Israel or helping to keep a friend informed, to donating money to those directly in Israel or who are buying and sending urgently needed supplies to IDF reservists; to grand efforts including going to Israel to volunteer.

Greater Philadelphia ZOA is encouraging advocacy, monitoring the anti-Jewish activities, responding when we can and trying to be pro-active in getting out in front of problems as much as possible. Some of our work is in the public eye such as counter-demonstrations and letters-to-the-editor. Other work we are engaged in is behind the scenes – speaking with school-board members, university presidents and editors and news directors and other officials.

Please see a number of pro-Israel advocacy items below. Now more than ever – for Israel and for American and world Jewry – advocacy and activism is vitally important. There are many advocacy options. Please partake and encourage others to participate. While the needs are great in Israel, if you can: Please also support our fight in the information war.

In addition, accurate information and public opinion are vitally important. If we at Greater Philadelphia ZOA can be of help to you – or if you want to help us at this time – please reach out at 610-660-9466 or [email protected]

Newsletter for September 9, 2022

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,

We hope that our newsletter this week finds you and your loved ones well. For those who are not feeling well, we wish for you or them a complete and speedy recovery.

ADVOCACY for “Back to School”

With the exception of locations where there are labor disputes, America’s K through 12 schools are back in session – which means that in classrooms, schools and entire school districts, young Americans are vulnerable to being taught propaganda and lies about the Muslim and Arab war against the Jewish People and the Jewish state – euphemistically known as “The Israel-Palestine Conflict.”

We know, for example that in July, the National Education Association: America’s largest union, approved an initiative to emphasize “Palestinian” history, geography and culture in America’s schools; that during the summer, the Democratic Socialists of America’s BDS and Palestine Solidarity Working Group held training workshops for teachers under the guise of “Educators for Palestine;” that a national initiative called “the National Black Lives Matter Week of Action in Our Schools” was promoting those training workshops for schoolteachers; and that the national organization “BLM at School” is in a partnership with the NEA’s “edJustice” program.

But the effort to demonize Israel, Zionism and the Jewish community before young Americans need not be part of a national campaign. It can happen merely through the initiative of a single anti-Israel educator.

It is therefore vitally important to pay attention to what is happing in your local school district, in individual schools and in the classroom. If you have school-age children, grandchildren, and/or nieces and nephews, ask to see their textbooks so that you can scan through them to see if there are errors or deliberate misinformation; find out if other supplementary books are being used, or if a newspaper or websites are used as supplementary materials or are suggested for students to turn to as resources.

Some classes or schools may use or suggest the anti-Israel New York Times or Philadelphia Inquirer; teachers might suggest students look at the websites of the anti-Israel Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International or other problematic websites or organizations; younger students might be asked to read “A Little Piece of Ground,” an anti-Israel book that the publisher describes as “explores the human cost of the occupation of Palestinian lands through the eyes of a young boy” that is recommended to be used in classrooms for children as young as third grade or other propaganda materials presented as children’s literature.

Please reference and use Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s Textbook Survey Form: https://philly.zoa.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2020/06/textbook-survey-form-updated-012819.pdf

If you see any problematic materials being used or suspect that there might be, please contact Greater Philadelphia ZOA at [email protected] or at 610-660-9466.

‘The Philadelphia Inquirer’ continues its campaign against Israel

A pro-Palestinian reporter puts her finger on the scale.

By Steve Feldman

(September 8, 2022 / JNS) Anti-Israel “news” reports, analyses and op-eds have been routine at The Philadelphia Inquirer for more than a generation.

An Aug. 23 staff-written news article about an anti-Jewish extremist who lost a job at a local school a year ago was especially egregious in its efforts to solicit sympathy for an avowed Jew-hater, and itself incited resentment and hatred of Jews. In addition, it violated multiple journalism ethics standards, including failure to offer even a shred of objectivity or balance.

Moreover, reporter Massarah Mikati had signed an online manifesto laced with demonstrably false accusations against Israel that called on journalists to slant the news in favor of the Palestinian Arabs. Inquirer editors never should have allowed her to report on that subject.

What ‘CNN’ left out of its special on anti-Semitism

Why did the network ignore left-wing, black nationalist and Islamist Jew-hatred?

By Morton A. Klein

(August 29, 2022 / JNS) There were some good points in CNN’s recent special on anti-Semitism, such as a discussion of the importance of the Secure Community Network’s synagogue security training, a description of the harassment and death threats against a pro-Israel college student, and the general acknowledgment that anti-Semitism is a serious, growing problem.

Unfortunately, however, the special grossly downplayed left-wing and Islamist anti-Semitism, and didn’t even mention black nationalists and other major sources of Jew-hatred. This seems in large part due to CNN’s reliance on the left-wing Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and its CEO, former Obama administration official Jonathan Greenblatt, as well as U.S. State Department anti-Semitism envoy Deborah Lipstadt, who has compared pro-Jewish former President Donald Trump to the Nazis, and the far-left group T’ruah’s Jill Jacobs.

The ADL, for example, recently stated that boycotts of Israel alone do not count as anti-Semitic; praised anti-Semitic congresswoman Ilhan Omar as “committed to a more just world”; defended anti-Semitic NGOs like Amnesty International, along with the extremist anti-Israel philanthropist George Soros; and tried to defund and remove the tax exemption from three pro-Israel groups, including Christian Zionists; among numerous other dangerous positions.

We are looking for volunteers to make calls.

If you are able to help with any of these, please contact executive director Steve Feldman at 610-660-9466.
