EBulletin for July 14, 2017

Have a Business? Know Someone Who Does?

Why not promote your business or service – or theirs – in Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s 2017 Gala Ad Journal?

Everyone who attends our Gala will see the book, plus an electronic version will be emailed to our members, supporters and contacts; it will be on our social media sites; and on our Web page. Throughout the year, we remind people via email to check out the book online and patronize our advertisers.

Ads are a great way to reach potential new clients or customers. They also enable Greater Philadelphia ZOA to have programs and activities throughout the year to educate, advocate and reach out on behalf of a secure, strong and vibrant Jewish State of Israel; a strong mutually beneficial U.S.-Israel relationship; and a secure Jewish community.

Don’t have a business? Please consider placing a notice to congratulate our honorees and to thank them for what they do throughout the year for Israel; to state your support for Israel; or perhaps to salute ZOA during our 120th anniversary year.

Please see the link immediately below for an electronic version of our ad-space reservation form. Below that is a link to our Eventbrite page, where you can purchase an ad or notice electronically. Some ads/notices include tickets to our Gala. If you have any questions, please call our Office at 610-660-9466.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Support the Taylor Force Act!

HR 1164 in the House, and the corresponding S474 in the Senate, are both known as the Taylor Force Act, named in memory of an American who was murdered in Israel by a Palestinian-Arab. The Palestinian Authority pays terrorists a pension, or pays the pension to his or her family if they are eliminated. The bill calls for aid to be cut to the Palestinian Authority because it rewards terrorism and murderers.

Congressman Lloyd Smucker, who represents the Lancaster area, became one of the latest co-sponsors of the bill from our area. Please call him to thank him at:

202-225-2411.

There are other local lawmakers who have not yet become co-sponsors of the legislation.

They are:

U.S. Rep. Robert Brady: 202-225-4731

U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans: 202-225-4001

U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan: 202-225-2011

U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle: 202-225-6111

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent: 202-225-6411

U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross: 202-225-6501

U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo: 202-225-6572

U.S. Rep. Tom MacArthur: 202-225-4765

U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester: 202-225-4165

Sen. Bob Casey: 202-224-6324

Sen. Patrick Toomey: 202-224-4254

Sen. Cory Booker: 202-224-3224

Sen. Robert Menendez: 202-224-4744

Sen. Thomas Carper: 202-224-2441

Sen. Chris Coons: 202-224-5042

Please call their office and ask that they co-sponsor either HR 1164 or S474.

Thank you!

EBulletin for June 29, 2017

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,

Summer is here and many of you have children or grandchildren or nieces or nephews away at camp. It is important to monitor what – if any – Israel-related programming and materials may be taking place or distributed there. While we focus on what is being taught (or not taught) at school, we often don’t think about camp. While we hope it is all positive and pro-Israel, we cannot make a blanket assumption. Ask your kids or grandkids or nieces/nephews or find out from the camp directly. If there is anything that you are unsure of, you can check with ZOA, and if you are aware or find out about speakers or programs that are anti-Israel, be sure to politely challenge the camp. Thank you for your vigilance.

Please be sure to read, and try to participate!

Have You Received Our Gala Mailer?

By now you should have received our mailer about Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s 2017 Gala Tribute Book and Ad Journal. Please be sure to read about our honorees and the significance of this book to the local pro-Israel community and Greater Philadelphia ZOA’s activities.

Even if you are not a business owner, you can participate by placing a personal message in the book, or you can ask a local business person that you patronize to consider promoting his or her business or practice in our book. Business ads in our Gala Ad Journal not only help Greater Philadelphia ZOA, but they can also help merchants and professionals reach new prospective customers, patients or clients.

If you did not receive one, please let us know and we will get one out to you right away.

Do You Do Desktop Publishing?

Greater Philadelphia ZOA is looking for someone with desktop publishing experience to work on our Gala Tribute Book/Ad Journal this July and August. If you or someone you know is interested in taking on this project, please call our executive director, Steve Feldman, at 610-660-9466.

The Zionist Organization of America is celebrating our 120th anniversary this year. We will mark this milestone with a number of events, and at those events we will have on display our special 120th anniversary banner. We invite you to participate by placing a name on the banner. Not only will we have the banner at our meetings and special events, but it will also be on our Web site, social-media and in our emails.

You can add to the banner your name, your spouse’s name, the name(s) of children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents, siblings, a special friend, a Zionist hero of yours – or even “anonymous.”

Each donation of $36 entitles you a name on the banner, and we have gotten more than 20 already – yes, including one “anonymous.” The first 120 names we receive will be added to the banner. We hope to get the banner printed by August 1 so it can be available for our next big event: The Greater Philadelphia ZOA Gala on Sept. 12.

We will keep this banner on display at our events well past our 120th year – so people will see these names for years to come.

Please send your names and your donations of $36 for each to: ZOA, P.O. Box 56, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. Please include your phone number in case we have any questions. Please write on the memo line: “120 Club.”

Thank you in advance for participating.

EBulletin for June 22, 2017

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters,

We are moved by the great, early response to our “120 Club” in celebration of ZOA’s 120th anniversary. We will only place the first 120 names on the banner that we receive donations for. In addition to their own names, we have received a donation to place a name in memory of a friend who was a Zionist activist, and from another donor who merely wants to be listed as “anonymous.” A name on our banner will be a great tribute to a loved one, or a way to encourage young relatives to pick up the Zionist baton from you. See details below.

We had another Greater Philadelphia ZOA quarterly meeting last night, chock full of important information from our three guest speakers. See photo coverage later in this newsletter.

We appreciate those of you who attended, and are especially grateful for the many volunteers who helped out. Our next such meeting is planned for November.

Greater Philadelphia ZOA is looking for volunteers to help with a special mailing that we are doing Monday beginning at 10 a.m. and should be done by 2 p.m.  We will need 10 volunteers.

The mailing will take place near our office in Bala Cynwyd. If you are able to lend us a hand and a few hours of your time, we would greatly appreciate it.

Please email us or phone us at 610-660-9466 if you are able to help out.

Thank you in advance!

EBulletin for June 9, 2017

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,

As all of you know, this past Tuesday, ZOA had its annual Washington Advocacy Mission. There is a lot of post-mission work to be done, and that is where each of you come in.

If you have not already done so, please take five minutes to call or email each of your senators and your House member and ask them to co-sponsor each of the legislative items that we went to Washington to lobby for. Then, please take a few minutes more to post the information on social media and send emails to your contacts and encourage everyone you know throughout America to call or write their lawmakers. These four bills in the Senate and seven resolutions in the House are each vitally important both to America and Israel. With each of you joining in this effort, together we can get the legislation passed and one step closer to becoming law.

Imagine the difference it will make if U.S. aid is cut to the Palestinian Authority because it pays terrorists and murderers to kill Jews; if more sanctions are placed on Iran; if waivers are removed preventing the president from delaying the moving of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem; if the United Nations is penalized for its anti-Israel vendetta.  These are the objectives of these pieces of legislation.

To get the legislative numbers and names of the bills and resolutions, links to copies of the legislation, contact information for all 535 members of Congress and to see which area lawmakers are already co-sponsors, please click on this link: http://philly.zoa.org/local-news/help-us-lobby-congress-pro-israel-legislation/

Meanwhile, see a report and pictures from the ZOA Washington Advocacy Mission later in this newsletter.

We are hoping to have a quarterly meeting on June 21 – location to be announced. We know it is short notice but we have an opportunity to have some special guest speakers. So please save the date and we will let you know all of the details next week.

“Father’s Day” is just around the corner, and with neckties being the traditional gift, we have something appropriate for the holiday for you to give or wear yourself. See an item about it later in this email.

We have had to postpone our mailing scheduled for Monday – but we are still in need of volunteers. See the “Volunteers” notice below.

Are you a part of ZOA’s “120 Club” yet? See details below and add your name to the growing list of participants for this special commemoration of our 120th anniversary. Time is limited to participate.

Finally, a special community event is taking place in August that Greater Philadelphia ZOA is thrilled to be participating in. See details about “Hava NaGrilla” below.

Greater Philadelphia ZOA is looking for volunteers to help with a special mailing that we are doing next week.

The mailing will take place near our office in Bala Cynwyd. If you are able to lend us a hand and a few hours of your time, we would greatly appreciate it. We will let you know by email when it is taking place.

EBulletin for May 25, 2017

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,

Why not pick up a perfectly perforated gift for yourself or someone else?

The Israeli government has issued a postage stamp recognizing the important work that ZOA does on the occasion of ZOA’s 120th anniversary. You can get a copy of this special collectable as a keepsake for yourself or to give as a gift for a small donation. There is just a limited number of these items available, so act as soon as possible. Once our supply of these is gone, you won’t have a chance to get something like this for another 120 years!

See a copy of the flyer below.

Just before the mission we will send out an email with bill/resolution numbers as well as contact information for our local lawmakers as well as for lawmakers throughout the country. We will ask you to share this with friends, family, colleagues and social-media contacts throughout America and ask you to encourage them to participate in this pro-Israel endeavor.

Are Zionists Worse than Islamists?

By Lee S. Bender

Are Zionists worse than Islamists?  According to how the mainstream media, the U.N., the E.U., NGOs, universities and academia, U.S. government officials, and Arab and Muslim propaganda tend to whitewash Islamism – including horrific acts of Islamic-inspired terrorism – and denigrate Zionism, the answer is yes.  Here’s a handy guide.

Islamism: Can there be any serious argument about a religious-political system that seeks to enshrine and enact its laws (sharia) on lands it occupies, and attempts to conquer through jihad (holy war)?  Sharia law essentially abuses women, endorses so-called honor killings and female genital mutilation, demands male supremacy, is biased against all “infidels,” glorifies those who chop off the heads of Jews and Christians or who otherwise murder infidels, stones adulterers, puts to death apostates, cuts off the hands of thieves, severely punishes those who criticize Mohammed or Islam, treats non-believers as second-class citizens (dhimmis), and is anti-American, anti-Semitic, and anti-democracy.  Its ultimate goal is Islamic supremacy and triumphalism.  What positive things have Islamists brought to the world at large?

Zionism: According to the Jewish Virtual Library, the term was coined in 1890 by Nathan Birnbaum and generally refers to “the national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel.  Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Zionism has come to include the movement for the development of the State of Israel and the protection of the Jewish nation in Israel through support for the Israel Defense Forces.”  The Jewish people’s basic right to self-determination owing to its long history of being persecuted and living as a diaspora community is potent and self-evident.  Israel is an open democracy that respects all civil rights and grants equal rights to women, minorities (25% are Arab and non-Jews), and gays.  It has an independent judiciary, a robust free press, and excellent health care and educational systems.  It upholds freedom of religion and worship with full and complete access to religious sites – in short, classic Western liberal values.  This is all enshrined in its Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel.
